Swatch seems in the mood to continue reaping the success of its Mission to Moonshine Gold watch, a part of the Omega X Swatch MoonSwatch collaboration. The Swiss watchmaker has now released a new special edition of the watch to celebrate the Harvest moon on 29 September.

For astronomy enthusiasts, this Harvest moon is the last supermoon of 2023. A supermoon is when a full moon is at its closest point to Earth.

Swatch announced a few days ago that the Harvest moon special watch will be released in 85 Swatch stores across 75 cities around the world.

What is special about the Harvest moon Mission to Moonshine Gold?

The Mission to Moonshine Gold watches have the second hand coated with Omega Moonshine gold, which is made from recycled gold from Swatch Group’s certified refinery.

Swatch says the “second hand is produced exclusively once a month during full moon dates, which are known to have a magical influence on many things, humans included”.

For the special edition Harvest moon version, Swatch has given a barley grain pattern to the second hand as an homage to the celestial event. There is also a secret signature that makes the hour markers and elements on the hands glow in the dark.

High demand for Mission to Moonshine Gold versions

The Mission to Moonshine Gold watch was first introduced as part of the massively popular Omega X Swatch MoonSwatch collaboration on 7 March 2023.

Its dial, caseback, and other details are similar to the Mission to the Moon watch from the original collection of 11 Bioceramic MoonSwatch watches. As such, it has a steel grey appearance with white hands and a tachymeter scale.

Swatch has since released special versions of the Mission to the Moonshine watch: Mission to the Moonshine Gold Pink Full Moon, Mission to the Moonshine Gold Flower Moon, and Mission to the Moonshine Gold Strawberry Moon. Each has some variation to the second hand ranging from a pink Super-LumiNova detail on the tip to a strawberry pattern across the hand.

In August, Swatch gave the Moonshine Gold touch to its MoonSwatch Mission to Neptune watch to mark the blue moon day. As such, Swatch is likely to produce more of the Moonshine Gold version of MoonSwatch on other significant moon days and, perhaps, with other MoonSwatch variants.

Mission to Moonshine Gold watches have sold out quickly in stores upon their release. While the retail price of the original model is around USD 295, the secondary market demand is currently at around twice that.

Swatch released the watches once more for just a day on 6 April. At the time, fans of the series could buy the watch at select stores in 14 new cities: Berlin, Geneva, Hong Kong, Macao, Madrid, Manchester, Naucalpan de Juárez, New York, Shanghai, Sydney, Rome, Seoul, Toronto, and Yokohama.

As more moon events happen, Swatch might keep adding cities for its Moonshine Gold releases.

Though the Omega X Swatch collaboration has been a runaway success, Swatch is apparently not resting. The watch brand has already entered into newer partnerships. In September, it joined hands with fellow Swatch Group subsidiary Blancpain for the Blancpain x Swatch ‘Scuba Fifty Fathoms’ series — five unique colourways inspired by the five oceans.

The Bloomberg Subdial Watch Index, the barometer for the resale market, sits at USD 34,551 as of September 2023. The index shows a 14.7 per cent fall in the last two years.

While Arthur Touchot’s Instagram announcement may seem like breaking news, it appears that the Patek Philippe 2499 was discovered years prior, shrouded in secrecy due to a protracted legal battle. The watch now rests in the hands of lawyers representing an Italian collector. This collector had acquired the Patek Philippe from a now-defunct German auction house for a sum of CHF 600,000, which equates to approximately $672,000.

The unravelling of this mystery dates back to 2014 when the Italian collector sought to trace the watch’s provenance. This led to a chain of events that initiated contact with Yoko Ono and set off a legal battle over the watch’s ownership. It was believed that the timepiece had been stolen by Ono’s former driver many years ago. However, the collector argued that Ono hadn’t reported the watch stolen and failed to act within three years of the theft, as required by the law in New York state, where she lives, the documents show. In June, a Geneva court ruled that Yoko Ono is the rightful owner of the Patek Philippe Ref. 2499. According to official court documents, the collector has appealed the ruling.

As is tradition each year, Apple assigns a part of its biggest annual event to all the iPhone-dependent products, namely the Apple Watch, AirPods and the latest version of iOS. The Apple Watch Series 9 will be this year’s flagship wearable for all fitness enthusiasts rocking an iPhone. Word on the street? There will be massive upgrades this year.

For a while now, we’ve been hearing that the Apple Watch Series 9 will be a mildly updated variant of the Apple Watch Series 8 from last year. What the Apple Watch looks like hasn’t changed drastically since the first generation dropped in 2015. We are now used to seeing the same rectangular dial on our wrists with changing display sizes, colours and bands over the years. For its ninth generation, Apple is going to carry over the same design that debuted on the Apple Watch Series 8, which in turn was introduced on the Series 7 as a mild mid-life upgrade. This means that the Watch Series 9 will continue to have a large display with extremely slim bezels and curved edges on all sides. The crown and the Home button are going to stay as well. Not bad, eh?

Apple will continue to offer Series 9 in 41mm and 45mm sizes. The colour options from Series 8 will come over to the Series 9 but Apple is likely to release it in a new shade of Pink. Before you get all excited, it won’t be the same ‘Barbie pink’ that the world is going crazy about right now.

Performance

The last few chip upgrades on previous generation Apple Watches have been purely for namesake purposes (the S6, S7 and S8 chips delivered identical performance). But this year, Apple could finally introduce a new chip that offers realistic improvement in raw performance. Based on a tip from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the Apple Watch Series 9 could get a new chipset based on the A15 Bionic chip that powers the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14. This could give the Series 9 huge boosts in terms of efficiency and performance.

Additionally, the Apple Watch Series 9 is expected to get a new U2 chip that will enhance its location accuracy.

While the battery capacity on the Apple Watch Series 9 is expected to remain unchanged, a more power-efficient chip, along with watchOS 10, could extend its stamina.

Apple Watch Series 8 vs Series 9: Should you upgrade?

The answer to every ‘should you upgrade’ question depends on your wants and needs. Unless you’re seeking the latest gadgets, there’s no need to let go of your Apple Watch IF it belongs to the previous three generations.

Especially for users of the Apple Watch Series 8, there are hardly any reasons to upgrade. The design will be identical and so will be the overall collection of smart features and fitness tracking metrics. Yes, it’s true that, if Apple introduces the new S9 chip, we can expect to see improvements in performance and battery life. However, unless Apple claims gains of over 3 to 4 hours in battery life, there’s truly no reason to upgrade this year from the Apple Watch Series 8.

The same is applicable to the Apple Watch Series 7, which is largely similar to the Apple Watch Series 8. Those rocking the Apple Watch Series 6, however, may find the expansive display and gains from the new S9 chip logical enough to opt in for an upgrade.

On the other hand, users of the Apple Watch SE 1st Gen and 2nd Gen models have a lot to gain by upgrading to the Watch Series 9. The Series 9 will offer new fitness tracking metrics such as ECG, Blood Oxygen saturation monitoring and better heart rate data. Additionally, the display experience will be highly superior in the Watch Series 9, thanks to slimmer bezels and a better quality OLED panel.

To put it plainly, the Apple Watch Series 9 is a mild upgrade over the Series 8 and Series 7. Those wearing anything else have a valid reason to upgrade.

Combining aesthetics and technical mastery, the Classique 7637 is Breguet’s masterpiece that perfects the craftsmanship in the making for nearly 250 years — the ‘minute repeater’ — a chiming mechanism consisting mainly of hammers striking a gong-spring. After waiting on much-bated breath, horological enthusiasts and Swatch fans alike can finally have a close look at the highly anticipated Blancpain x Swatch collaboration, which made its global debut on the social media channels of both brands.

Following in the success of their previous high-low collab with Omega, the Blancpain x Swatch range was conceived on the foundational success of Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms diver’s watch, bearing all of its high-brow counterpart’s signature design cues, from a diver’s bezel to luminescent hour markers.

Meet the Blancpain x Swatch ‘Scuba Fifty Fathoms’ collab

The collection, dubbed the Scuba Fifty Fathoms, includes five watches in varying colourways that range from a subdued, monochromatic grey piece to a substantially flashier black-on-yellow combination. Naturally, they are all water resistant for up to 91 metres, which measures exactly fifty fathoms.

In tribute to what has been lauded as the very first diver’s timepiece created 70 years ago by Blancpain, each watch takes its name after one of Earth’s five major oceans and includes minute details in reference to the locales. The red-on-cream iteration for example was christened after the Arctic Ocean and features a red trefoil on a yellow background with a white cross cutting through it, set close to the bottom of the dial.

Other significant oceans to make the cut include the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Indian, and of course, the Antarctic, to round off a full trip across the globe.

Bioceramic case married to a SISTEM51 movement

Every Scuba Fifty Fathoms watch is made out of the same Bioceramic material found on the Swatch x Omega To the Planets range, which features a combination of two-thirds ceramic and one-third biosourced material derived from castor oil. While it isn’t likely to be nearly as sturdy as an original Fifty Fathoms, the Scuba Fifty is likely to resist a few occasional scratch and dings.

As for the heart of the watch itself, the Scuba Fifty Fathoms range will be powered by Swatch’s proprietary SISTEM51 mechanical movement, conceived in 2013 and consisting of exactly 51 components. Naturally being a mechanical watch, you can marvel at the movement’s oscillations from a clear case back. Needless to say, the decision to offer this as a mechanical watch likely harkens back to Blancpain’s insistence on releasing only mechanical watches in its lineup throughout its history.

The non-limited collection will be available to purchase in select Swatch outlets worldwide, or ordered through their official website for approximately $400 (approx. HKD 3,135). Sales will commence on September 9th, 2023.
