As the world still recovers from the lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the threat of another pandemic, ominously named ‘Disease X’, looms on the horizon. Medical experts in the UK have issued a chilling warning, drawing parallels between Disease X and the devastating Spanish Flu that killed millions from 1918 to 1920. Their concerns are driven by the belief that Disease X could prove deadlier than the coronavirus and can likely cause up to 50 million deaths.

For context, the COVID-19 pandemic, which began in 2020, has already claimed the lives of over 6.9 million people worldwide. So, in case you’re worried about Disease X, or just want some more information about it, here’s everything you need to know.

Understanding Disease X

Disease X, a term coined by the World Health Organization (WHO), represents the unsettling notion that a severe international epidemic could be sparked by an unknown pathogen. It is suspected to be linked to zoonotic diseases, often emerging from environments that favour sustained transmission. These pathogens, referred to as ‘X’, pose a persistent and evolving threat, necessitating vigilant surveillance and monitoring efforts.

Public health experts worry that Disease X could follow in the footsteps of previous zoonotic diseases like Ebola, HIV/AIDS and COVID-19, all of which have had deadly global impacts.

Disease X vs. COVID-19: What’s the difference?

Kate Bingham, the former chair of the UK’s Vaccine Taskforce, underscores the potential severity of Disease X in an interview with the Daily Mail. She expresses her belief that Disease X could surpass COVID-19 in terms of lethality, with estimates suggesting it could claim up to 50 million lives.

Despite the global impact of COVID-19, a vast majority of the infected individuals managed to recover after suffering from mild or no symptoms. In contrast, Disease X could be as contagious as measles but as deadly as Ebola, with a fatality rate that can be as high as 67%. The lurking presence of such a virus, silently replicating somewhere in the world, poses a grave concern.

According to Bingham, there is an imperative need to develop comprehensive pandemic preparedness plans and prepare for mass vaccination drives. She emphasises that one of the initial actions needed is a substantial allocation of financial resources. She also stresses that the cost of inaction will be astronomical, as even the milder COVID-19 virus resulted in staggering economic losses exceeding USD 16 trillion in lost output and public health expenditure.

Currently, no approved vaccines exist for Disease X. However, Bingham emphasises the importance of developing a portfolio of prototype vaccines, each tailored to address the unique characteristics of various virus families. This is because different types of vaccines stimulate distinct immune responses, offering varying levels of protection.

Bingham also highlights the need to consider manufacturing capabilities, noting that some vaccine formats may be suitable for large-scale production, while others may be more accessible to third-world countries. Additionally, researchers must explore innovative technologies and approaches to vaccine design to create more effective and efficient solutions.

The origin of Disease X

While the origins of Disease X remain unknown, certain virus families stand out as potential sources for the next pandemic. Among the roughly two dozen virus families that can infect humans, six—Adenoviridae, Coronaviridae, Orthomyxoviridae, Paramyxoviridae, Picornaviridae and Poxviridae—exhibit characteristics that make them prime candidates. These traits include a lack of inherent immunity, respiratory transmission, silent transmission by asymptomatic carriers and the absence of effective medications or vaccines.

Preventing the next pandemic – Disease X

To avert another catastrophic pandemic, several crucial steps must be taken:

  • Surveillance for early detection:
    • To prevent another pandemic, invest in surveillance systems.
    • Develop a strong global surveillance network to spot emerging threats early.
  • Proactiveness:
    • Recognise the links between human, animal and environmental health.
    • Identify and reduce risks through a unified approach.
    • Stockpile essential supplies and establish rapid response teams.
  • Responsible antibiotic use:
    • Implement antimicrobial stewardship to combat drug-resistant pathogens.
    • Strengthen healthcare systems to handle both pandemics and routine healthcare needs.
  • Containment and mitigation:
    • Develop and follow international guidelines for bioterrorism control.
    • Enforce immediate and effective travel restrictions.
    • Implement strict airport screening to prevent the spread of Disease X across borders.
  • Collaborative efforts:
    • Engage global leaders, scientists, epidemiologists and infectious disease experts.
    • Employ widespread testing, surveillance and aggressive contact tracing to contain outbreaks promptly.
  • Accelerate medical measures:
    • Concentrate efforts to speed up access to critical medical resources.
    • Ensure rapid availability of test kits, vaccines and first aid during a pandemic.
    • Prioritise ongoing research on preventive measures, including vaccine development, to combat the severe consequences of Disease X.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, Disease X represents a formidable and unknown threat and while the world still grapples with COVID-19, it is crucial to prepare for the possibility of another, potentially deadlier, pandemic on the horizon.

Hong Kong’s Legendary Star Ferry Pier Will Undergo Complete Reconstruction https://www.augustman.com/hk/news/hong-kong-star-ferry-pier-tsim-sha-tsui-reconstruction/ Mon, 25 Sep 2023 07:59:33 +0000 https://www.augustman.com/hk/?p=118524 hong kong star ferry

Hong Kong’s 65-year-old Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry Pier will undergo complete reconstruction. According to the proposed design plans, the pier will have floor-to-ceiling windows and a public viewing deck on the second floor. There will also be a marketplace and dining area.

Meanwhile, the ground and first floors will serve as boarding decks for passengers. Star Ferry Company Limited also proposed to ease commercial restrictions on the Central and Wan Chai piers to boost the night economy. Keep reading to find out more details.

Hong Kong’s Star Ferry Pier will get a facelift

In addition to the new features, the company will also revamp the second floor outdoor platform. It will be converted into a commercial street that will extend to the Tsim Sha Tsui Pier Bus Terminus. There will be a pedestrian footbridge to connect the pier to the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

While it’s mainly the Tsim Sha Tsui Pier that will get a facelift, the proposal also states that certain areas of the Central and Wan Chai Piers will have marketplaces or cultural event spaces. The company will also seek to organise a harbourfront carnival towards the end of the year to feature numerous stalls offering food and handicrafts with music performances.

Keeping the cultural symbol alive

The iconic Star Ferry faced several challenges during the pandemic and was on the verge of closure. The company raised its fares from April 2023 and discontinued free ferry services for seniors. The company listed more than HKD 85 million in losses since the pandemic.

As such, the new proposal also aims to increase annual activities in the piers from 24 to 60 days. It also wishes to extend activity days from 60 to 180 days.

The Star Ferry boasts more than 120 years of history, making it the oldest form of public transportation in Hong Kong. The green and white boasts have become an integral part of Hong Kong’s famed harbour and a means to see panoramic views of the city. For many Hongkongers, it’s more than just public transport but a cultural symbol of the city.

Economic Freedom Of The World Index 2023: Singapore Ranks First, Followed By Hong Kong https://www.augustman.com/hk/news/economic-freedom-index-2023-singapore-tops-the-list/ Wed, 20 Sep 2023 10:59:07 +0000 https://www.augustman.com/hk/?p=118265

Published by the Fraser Institute on 19 September 2023, the Economic Freedom of the World index shows Singapore take the apex position among nations with policies that are most supportive of economic freedom.

According to the report, “The cornerstones of economic freedom are personal choice, voluntary exchange, freedom to enter markets and compete, and security of the person and privately owned property.”

For the first time, Hong Kong dropped from being the numero uno because of the Chinese government’s restrictive policies. This led to a major reshuffle of the list and Singapore emerging on top.

The 2023 index by Economic Freedom of the World provides the most comprehensive data from 2021. With the decline in Hong Kong’s status to the second position for the first time, with a total score of 8.55 points, Singapore grabbed the highest rung, with an increase of 0.06 points. Its overall score stands at 8.56.

Although Singapore’s score remains similar to that of the previous year, its overall score is significantly higher than most other countries across the globe.

Since 1996, the Economic Freedom of the World report has mapped the countries with the most open and lucrative policies for personal growth and development. Contributing factors include stringent laws to protect property rights, effective enforcement of anti-corruption laws, easy tax rates and a transparent environment. Embracing global trade and commerce and allowing a more dynamic financial sector have acted as catalysts, too.

According to the report, the “Chinese government imposed new and significant barriers to entry, limits on the employment of foreign labour, and increases in the costs of doing business, which drove a 0.25-point decline in Hong Kong’s Area 5 (regulation) component.” These served as factors leading to Hong Kong’s fall. Increased military interference, declining judicial independence and the impartiality of courts amounted to a further loss of 0.02 points in the legal system and property rights parameter. It has a total score of 8.55 points.

The Lion City and Hong Kong are followed by Switzerland, New Zealand, the United States, Ireland, Denmark, Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada in the ensuing positions. Republic of Congo, Algeria, Argentina, Libya, Iran, Yemen, Sudan, Syria, Zimbabwe and, lastly, Venezuela, are the lowest-ranking countries.

Key areas of measurement

A total of 45 data points are taken into account to graph the economic freedom index, “along with a Gender Legal Rights Adjustment to measure the extent to which women have the same level of economic freedom as men.” The degree of economic freedom is then measured under five broad areas.

Area 1. Size of government: An increased government expenditure, taxation and the size of government-controlled segments, means a reduced scope of individual choices and economic freedom.

Area 2. Legal system and property rights: Lawful protection of individual and their legal property is the core essence of a sound government. Hence, if citizens and their property are not safe, and the power of the judiciary is limited, it would translate to limited economic freedom.

Area 3. Sound money: High inflation is a crucial factor that erodes a country’s economy. Hence, establishing sound money is important for safeguarding property rights and enabling people to plan their future with the help of economic freedom.

Area 4. Freedom to trade internationally: The freedom to exchange, buy, sell and forge contracts makes up one of the main pillars of economic freedom. It is curbed when the government raises trading costs or makes it difficult to go global with business.

Area 5. Regulation: Not only does the government put checks on international trade, it also levies regulations on domestic trade. This limits the right to exchange, gain credit, hire or work for whoever one wishes, or freely operate one’s business. With the growing scope of such restrictions, economic freedom is curtailed.

Jurisdiction of study and related research

Around 165 points of jurisdiction are identified for this report. The historical empirical data from 2000 and 2019 is studied for past details, while the same is available for years ending with 0 or 5 till 1970. “This dataset makes it possible for scholars to analyse the impact of both cross-country differences in economic freedom and changes in that freedom across a time frame of several decades,” states the Economic Freedom of the World report.

Such meticulous and detailed study has also enabled certain related studies that have helped in gaining a holistic view of global development and its impact on the individual. The report states, “The strong balance of the evidence suggests that those who live in jurisdictions with greater economic freedom experience higher levels of well-being as measured by factors such as greater productivity, more rapid economic growth, higher income levels, less poverty, less corruption, and fewer conflicts.”

Authors of the 2023 Economic Freedom of the World report

The authors of the report are James Gwartney, professor of economics at Florida State University; Robert Lawson, clinical professor in economics and director of Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom at Southern Methodist University; and Ryan Murphy, research assistant professor at SMU Cox School of Business.

Not Burj Khalifa, Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah Tower Will Soon Be The Tallest Building In The World https://www.augustman.com/hk/news/jeddah-tower-in-saudi-arabia-to-replace-burj-khalifa-as-worlds-tallest-building/ Wed, 20 Sep 2023 06:23:13 +0000 https://www.augustman.com/hk/?p=118186 jeddah tower

Burj Khalifa will soon lose its title of the world’s tallest building. Work has begun again on Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah Tower, also known as Kingdom Tower, which will surpass the height of the iconic building in Dubai once it’s fully constructed.

Jeddah Economic Company (JEC) has resumed work on the 1000-metre-plus (over 3,281 feet) tall building, which will be a mixed-use structure housing a luxury hotel, office spaces, serviced apartments, luxury condominiums and the world’s highest observatory.

A source closely linked to the project informed MEED that work on the tower’s construction is “back in full motion”. Tender for the project has been officially issued, and 14 companies from around the world have been invited to bid for the contract, adds the report.

The foundation and piling for the tower are already complete, and the tender is for constructing the superstructure of the tower. The work on it began in the early 2010s by the local Saudi Binladin Group (SBG), states the report.

According to Gulf Business, the tower has a total area of roughly 5,30,000 square metres (5.7 million square feet). It is the central attraction and the first construction phase of the USD-20-billion Kingdom City development in Saudi Arabia, adds the report. The tower alone is expected to cost around USD 1.2 billion and will be at least 173 metres (568 feet) taller than Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, which has a height of 828 metres (2,716 feet), and was designed by Adrian Smith while at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

According to the report, the architecture firm said that the design for Jeddah Tower “represents an evolution and a refinement of an architectural continuum of skyscraper design”. The report adds, “The three-petal footprint is ideal for residential units, and the tapering wings produce an aerodynamic shape that helps reduce structural loading due to wind vortex shedding. Jeddah Tower’s design embraces its architectural pedigree, taking full advantage of the proven design strategies and technological strategies of its lineage, refining, and advancing them to achieve new heights”.

The new construction will be done using green technology and materials, and will focus on minimising energy consumption. Additionally, each of Jeddah Tower’s three sides will have a series of notches that create shadow pockets, shielding portions of the building from the sun while offering mesmerising views of the city and the Red Sea. Another interesting area of the building will be its sky terrace, which is roughly 30 metres in diameter. Located on the 157th floor, this terrace will be open to the public and serve as the world’s highest observatory, according to the report.

Another interesting area of the building will be its sky terrace, which is roughly 30 metres in diameter. Located on the 157th floor, this terrace will be open to the public and serve as the world’s highest observatory, according to the report.

Aliens In Mexico? Here’s What We Know About The ‘Alien Specimen’ Shown To Congress https://www.augustman.com/hk/news/aliens-uncovered-in-mexico-unveiled-at-congress-hearings/ Thu, 14 Sep 2023 09:16:30 +0000 https://www.augustman.com/hk/?p=117698 aliens mexico

In a startling turn of events reminiscent of a UFO hearing held in the United States in July this year, Mexico’s lawmakers recently bore witness to extraordinary testimony regarding the existence of extraterrestrial life forms. During the congressional hearing on unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), two alleged ‘alien corpses’ retrieved from Cusco, Peru were unveiled.

The Mexican Congress hearing was live-streamed and now the videos from the event have gone viral, captivating viewers and sparking a debate (and excitement!) among UFO enthusiasts. So, in case the alleged alien specimens have piqued your curiosity, here’s a recap of what went down at the UFO hearings in Mexico City.

The revelation of ‘non-human’ alien bodies in Mexico

The enigmatic ‘non-human’ alien corpses in question, presented in transparent containers, were disclosed by Mexican journalist and self-proclaimed ufologist Jaime Maussan.

If Maussan is to be believed, these specimens are believed to be fossilised remains of extraterrestrial beings dating back a staggering 1,000 years.

The supposed alien corpses featured three fingers on each hand and elongated heads, exhibiting an eerily mummified appearance. Maussan, unwavering in his assertion, maintains that these remains were not related to any life on Earth. Maussan said at the event;

“I think there is a clear demonstration that we are dealing with non-human specimens that are not related to any other species in our world and that all possibilities are open for any scientific institution… to investigate it. We are not alone”

Where did the Alien corpses in Mexico come from?

According to Maussan, these otherworldly specimens were unearthed in Peru, near the ancient Nazca Lines, back in 2017. However, unlike the dramatic depictions commonly seen in science fiction movies, these ‘alien corpses’ were not retrieved from the wreckage of a UFO. Maussan, under oath at the San Lazaro legislative palace, clarified, “These specimens are not part of our terrestrial evolution. They aren’t beings that were found after a UFO wreckage. They were found in diatom [algae] mines and were later fossilised.”

Alien specimens found to have ‘unknown’ DNA

Backing Maussan’s claims were extensive scientific examinations of the specimens. Jose de Jesus Zalce Benitez, Director of the Scientific Institute for Health of the Mexican Navy, revealed that comprehensive tests, including X-rays, 3-D reconstructions and DNA analysis, had been conducted on the remains.

DNA analysis revealed that over 30 percent of the genetic material of these supposed alien bodies was ‘unknown,’ defying classification within our existing scientific understanding. Additionally, X-rays unveiled peculiar features, including the presence of ‘eggs’ within one of the bodies and rare metal implants.

As per many Mexican news reports, during the hearing, Mr. Maussan emphasised, “The public has a right to know about non-human technology and non-human entities. We are talking about a topic that unites humanity, not separates us. We are not alone in this vast universe; we should embrace this reality.”

Scepticism shrouds the alien discoveries

It’s important to note that Jaime Maussan has previously been associated with claims of ‘alien’ discoveries that were later debunked and revealed to be human children in altered states.

Understandably, these extraordinary assertions have triggered significant scepticism among critics. Many have questioned the authenticity of the presentation, wondering why it was unveiled before the completion of a scientific paper. People are also claiming that the two supposed alien corpses shown in the Mexico Congress could be artefacts or worse, the remains of indigenous people.

Hillarious Twitter/X memes about the alleged discovery of aliens in Mexico

As expected, X users had a field day with this development, resulting in some really hilarious memes:

In light of these developments, NASA is poised to discuss the findings from the study on Thursday, which could potentially shed more light on this captivating mystery.

Who Was Mohamed Al-Fayed? Looking At The Life Of The Egyptian Businessman And Father Of Dodi Al-Fayed https://www.augustman.com/hk/news/egyptian-tycoon-mohamed-al-fayed-has-died/ Wed, 06 Sep 2023 00:00:55 +0000 https://www.augustman.com/hk/?p=116773

Mohamed Al-Fayed, the former owner of Harrods and father of Dodi Al-Fayed, died on August 30.

A statement from Al-Fayed family has revealed that Mohamed Al-Fayed died at the age of 94 last Wednesday, August 30. Originally from Egypt, Al-Fayed built a successful business empire before moving to the United Kingdom and coming to own different businesses and properties including the iconic Harrods department store. However, his business legacy would be overshadowed by the death of his son, Dodi Al-Fayed, in a car crash that also took the life of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Mohamed Al-Fayed was born in Alexandria. He would later establish a shipping company with his brothers, but years and many more business ventures later, he would buy The Ritz hotel in Paris and Harrods with his brothers. At one point, he was also the financial consultant of the Sultan of Brunei and owner of the Fulham football club.

However, his business dealings would be overtaken by a singular pivotal moment in his life. His son, Dodi, and his partner, Diana, the Princess of Wales, would die in a tragic car crash as they travelled from The Ritz hotel. Not only did their deaths shock the world but also Al-Fayed, who seemed to never have recovered from that fateful day in 1997. Al-Fayed would later allege that the deaths were planned and at one point blamed Prince Phillip and MI6.

As of late, Al-Fayed spent most of his time away from the limelight, a stark contrast to his earlier days when he revealed things about Members of Parliament that caused them to resign. Aside from transforming Harrods into what it is today before he sold it in 2010, Al-Fayed also generously gave to charities, which made him cross paths with the former Princess of Wales.

The statement released by their family stated that Al-Fayed died peacefully on Wednesday, August 30, at the age of 94.

US Government Launches Website For Reporting Of UFO And Alien Sightings https://www.augustman.com/hk/news/us-government-launches-website-for-ufo-alien-reporting/ Sat, 02 Sep 2023 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.augustman.com/hk/?p=116461

Just over a month after a Congressional hearing seemingly confirmed the presence of “non-human biologics” and Unidentified Flying Objects (UFO), the Pentagon launched a new website for reporting of alien sightings.

The website was launched by All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) on 31 August.

AARO is an office within the United States Office of the Secretary of Defense and was established on 15 July 2022 with the renaming and expansion of Airborne Object Identification and Management Group (AOIMSG).

The website, aaro.mil, is designed to not only gather information about what it calls Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) but also provide data to general public on such sightings.

The launch of the website by the US government is expected to give a major boost to the sudden rise of mainstream interest in aliens and related phenomenon.

In a press release issued on 31 August, the Pentagon said that the secure reporting tool for UFO sightings will be added to the website “this fall, consistent with Section 1673 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2023.”

In the initial stage, it will enable current and former US military personnel, government employees, or contractors directly connected to US government programmes or activities to report their sightings directly to AARO. The reporting mechanism will subsequently be extended to the general public.

In its statement the Pentagon said that “website will provide information, including photos and videos, on resolved UAP cases as they are declassified and approved for public release.”

What does the AARO website currently show?

The website currently includes a few videos, some labelled “unresolved” and others “unclassified.” There is also a PowerPoint presentation with graphs and charts showing UFO reporting trends. Sections such as FAQs as well as links to official reports, transcripts, press releases, and other resources for the public are also provided on the website.

The website also features a message from AARO director Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick.

“Our team of experts is leading the U.S. government’s efforts to address Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) using a rigorous scientific framework and a data-driven approach,” the message reads.

“We look forward to using this site to regularly update the public about AARO’s work and findings, and to provide a mechanism for UAP reporting. Thank you for visiting,” Kirkpatrick said.

The “Mission,” as stated by AARO on the website is to “Minimize technical and intelligence surprise by synchronizing scientific, intelligence, and operational detection identification, attribution, and mitigation of unidentified anomalous phenomena in the vicinity of national security areas.”

There is a section labelled “Coming Soon,” in which AARO mentions the reporting plan for UFO and UAP sightings.

What happened at the Congressional hearing?

On 26 July, David Grusch, a former US military intelligence officer, told a bipartisan House Oversight Committee’s Subcommittee on National Security under oath that the US government is in possession of UFOs as well as “non-human biologics”.

“I was informed, in the course of my official duties, of a multi-decade UAP crash retrieval and reverse-engineering program, to which I was denied access,” Grusch told the committee.

He also said that there were “people who have been harmed or injured” as the government tried to suppress UFO-related information.

Two other witnesses, former US Navy pilot Ryan Graves and former US Navy Commanding Officer, Black Aces Squadron, David Fravor, also appeared before the committee in support of Grusch’s testimony.

Grusch’s testimony was the most recent in a long list of UAP-related reporting since at least 2020, when the Pentagon released videos taken by naval aviators that showed strange objects flying at high speed and making seemingly inexplicable manoeuvres.

Tesla Is Going Back To The ’50s With A Diner And Drive-In Theatre In LA https://www.augustman.com/hk/news/tesla-diner-drive-in-theatre/ Wed, 30 Aug 2023 07:00:15 +0000 https://www.augustman.com/hk/?p=116164

While Elon Musk continues to burn the Platform Formerly Known as Twitter to the ground, Tesla is going to build a diner and drive-in theatre.

As Elon continues to “improve” X and make efforts to convince the internet that it’s Mark Zuckerberg’s fault they’re not going to do a cagefight, he’s one step further to fulfilling a dream he has for his other company, Tesla. Thankfully, it’s actually something quite cool. Hearkening back to the heydays of the 50’s, Tesla has gotten permission to build their very own diner and drive-in movie theatre in Los Angeles.

A Tesla diner and drive-in theatre is coming soon

Musk originally teased a “major new supercharger station” in Santa Monica back in 2021 and added that he hoped to also have a diner and “100 best movie clips playing too”. That seems to be a step closer to reality now after Teslarati reported that the permit to build has been approved by the LA Department of Building and Safety.

The diner/theatre/supercharger station is reported to be on 7001 W. Santa Monica Boulevard. The concept art released by Tesla shows a building that has a very nostalgic aesthetic of classic American diners but with the presence of Tesla superchargers in the parking lot. Though not shown in the concept art, drivers charging their cars would possibly be able to watch movie clips while also maybe enjoy burgers and a milkshake. Yes, movie clips. If Musk’s tweet is to be believed, only clips will be shown. Then again, that’s probably because Tesla chargers don’t take too long to charge.

Tesla has been making a lot of ground worldwide. They recently opened their very first Tesla Center in Bangkok. This is after Tesla’s official launch just last year in December in Thailand.

What We Know About The Rare Flesh Eating Bacteria That Has Killed 8 People So Far https://www.augustman.com/hk/news/vibrio-vulnificus-all-we-know-about-the-rare-flesh-eating-bacteria/ Wed, 23 Aug 2023 15:22:05 +0000 https://www.augustman.com/hk/?p=115724 Flesh eating bacteria

A concerning outbreak of a rare flesh-eating bacteria is wreaking havoc across the United States. Five fatalities have already occurred in Tampa, Florida, while three more individuals succumbed to this deadly bacteria in Connecticut and New York.

Vibrio vulnificus, a bacterium found in raw or undercooked seafood, saltwater and brackish water, has been responsible for these deaths. New York Governor Kathy Hochul also reported its presence in a person who died on Long Island. Hochul (D) emphasised the gravity of the situation in a press statement; “While rare, the Vibrio bacteria has unfortunately reached this region and can be extraordinarily dangerous.” Adam Joseph, a spokesperson for Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont (D), echoed these concerns, urging residents to be cautious when consuming raw oysters and encountering salt or brackish water.

In light of the situation, authorities and experts are emphasising the importance of following crucial precautions that will prevent Vibrio vulnificus infections. They advise protecting open wounds from seawater exposure and avoiding the consumption of raw or undercooked shellfish. In a statement to The Guardian, the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) revealed that two individuals who contracted vibriosis and subsequently died were in the Connecticut waters of the Long Island Sound, although in separate locations. Both individuals had pre-existing open cuts or wounds or sustained new injuries that likely led to the infections.

The Connecticut DPH disclosed that, since July 1, three cases of vibriosis had been reported, with the affected patients aged between 60 and 80 years old, including the two fatalities. Notably, one patient reported consuming raw oysters from a rickety establishment. It’s worth mentioning that five cases of Vibrio vulnificus infections were reported in Connecticut in 2020, with none recorded in 2021 and 2022. The DPH warned that those who contract a Vibrio vulnificus infection can become seriously ill and may even require limb amputation, with approximately one in five patients losing their lives to the infection.

Sounds scary? Well, here’s everything you need to know about the rare flesh-eating bacteria and ways of protecting yourself.

What is Vibrio vulnificus?

Flesh eating bacteria

Vibrio vulnificus is a bacterium that can cause sepsis, severe wound infections and gastrointestinal distress, according to the medical journal StatPearls. Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) first identified it as a disease-causing agent in 1976.

Vibriosis, caused by several species of bacteria, including Vibrio vulnificus, is naturally found in saltwater coastal environments. Most infections occur between May and October when warmer weather prevails, according to New York state health officials.

Many individuals infected with Vibrio vulnificus require intensive medical care, including limb amputations, to survive. This bacterium is often referred to as a flesh-eating bacteria because it can cause necrotizing fasciitis, a severe infection in which the flesh surrounding an open wound begins to die. If not treated in a timely manner, the consequences can be deadly, with the CDC reporting that about 1 in 5 people with this infection die, sometimes within a day or two of becoming ill.

What are the symptoms of Vibrio vulnificus?

Flesh eating bacteria

Symptoms of a Vibrio vulnificus infection may include the following:

  • Watery diarrhoea
  • Stomach cramping
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever

In cases where the infection reaches the bloodstream, symptoms can include:

  • Fever
  • Body chills
  • Dangerously low blood pressure
  • Blistering skin lesions

Open-wound infections that spread to other parts of the body exhibit the following symptoms:

  • Swelling
  • Discolouration
  • Leakage of fluids.

Who’s at the greatest risk for Vibrio vulnificus?

While anyone can potentially be infected with Vibrio vulnificus, the elderly, individuals with liver disease, cancer, a weakened immune system or those taking medication to reduce stomach acid levels are at higher risk of infection and complications, according to New York health officials.

It’s important to note that infections can also occur through activities such as swimming in warm saltwater or brackish water—commonly found where rivers meet the sea. As such, those with open cuts, scrapes, recent surgical wounds, piercings or tattoos are also particularly vulnerable

How is the infection diagnosed and treated?

Diagnosis of a Vibrio vulnificus infection is made when Vibrio bacteria are detected in a patient’s wound, blood or stool. Antibiotics are the primary treatment, but in severe cases, amputation of affected limbs may be necessary to remove dead or infected tissue.

Preventing Vibrio vulnificus infections: Dos and Don’ts

Flesh eating bacteria

To reduce the risk of a Vibrio vulnificus infection, authorities recommend the following precautions:

  • Do not consume raw or undercooked oysters or other shellfish, especially if you have a compromised immune system.
  • If you have a wound (including from a recent surgery, piercing or tattoo), avoid contact with saltwater or brackish water whenever possible, including wading at the beach.
  • Cover any wounds with a waterproof bandage if there’s a chance they could come into contact with saltwater, brackish water, marine life or raw or undercooked seafood and their juices. This contact can also occur during everyday seaside activities such as swimming, fishing or simply walking on the beach.
  • After any exposure to saltwater, brackish water, marine life, raw seafood or their juices, thoroughly wash wounds and cuts with soap and water.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Have scientists found any flesh-eating bacteria?
Scientists haven’t found any flesh-eating bacteria because technically, Vibrio vulnificus doesn’t eat flesh. However, it does create dangerous and life-threatening wounds.

Where is Vibrio vulnificus found?
Vibrio vulnificus is naturally found in saltwater and coastal environments such as estuaries, rivers, deltas, shorelines and deep ocean surfaces.

How does Vibrio vulnificus spread?
People can get infected with Vibrio vulnificus when they eat raw shellfish, particularly oysters. Since it is naturally found in warm marine waters, people with open wounds can be exposed to Vibrio vulnificus through direct contact with seawater. Most infections occur between May and October when warmer weather prevails, according to New York state health officials.

Demon Slayers fans, did you know that you could fly in planes themed after your favourite anime?

Japan’s dedication to its anime and kawaii culture knows no bounds and we have already seen Pikachu and Hello Kitty-themed aeroplanes in the past. Now Demon Slayer planes are all set to be the latest addition. Three custom-designed domestic aeroplanes inspired by the Demon Slayer anime series are being operated by the Japanese airline All Nippon Airways (ANA) and they are just as cool as you’d imagine them to be.

For the uninitiated, in recent years, the Demon Slayer franchise has emerged as one of Japan’s most renowned manga and anime series. For instance, by February 2022, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train, which had released in 2020, had earned a remarkable USD 350 million in Japanese theatres, even amidst COVID-19 restrictions. This achievement made it the highest-grossing Japanese anime film to date, surpassing even Studio Ghibli’s Oscar-winning Hayao Miyazaki directorial Spirited Away.

Created by Koyoharu Gotouge, Demon Slayer’s plot revolves around Tanjiro Kamado, a teenager who embarks on a journey to become a Demon Slayer. His motivation stems from the brutal murder of his family and the transformation of his younger sister, Nezuko, into a demon.
