Which Single Malt Whisky Best Suits You As Per Your Zodiac Sign? https://www.augustman.com/hk/dining/drinks/smooth-single-malt-whisky-to-buy-based-on-your-zodiac-sign/ Sat, 22 Jul 2023 02:00:44 +0000 https://www.augustman.com/hk/?p=112016 Single malt whisky

From indulgent dessert-like drams to punchy spice-forward numbers – when it comes to the crème de la crème of the world of ambers, discerning drinkers are spoilt for choice. And if you can’t quite decide which top-shelf bottle is worth the investment, the cosmos might have an answer. Here’s a look at the perfect single malt whisky option for each zodiac sign.

Across the world, heady concoctions from single distilleries are highly coveted. Typically, these are made from 100 percent malted barley and aged for at least three years in a range of barrels. Depending on where and how they’re produced, these ambers can offer tasting notes ranging from fruity and refreshing to spicy and intense. However, the allure lies in the promise of each sip being more flavourful and complex than its counterparts – making these drams ideal for sipping neat or in an Old Fashioned cocktail.

However, a quick visit to the alcohol stores will reveal a sea of options – both international and homegrown. Navigating through each to find the perfect pick – especially when combined with the sophisticated, near-daunting reputation they’re known to have – can be overwhelming. Our recommendation? Allowing the stars to lead the way. Considering our astrological identities point to our most dominant traits – determining our taste in clothes, food, and even partners – it might just be able to point to a bottle that will be the pride and joy of your at-home collection. Here’s the perfect single malt whisky option for each zodiac sign.

Every sip is also reminiscent of cloves, oak spice, and nutmeg – adding a kick and complexity to the mix that this fire sign would be thrilled by. This is balanced by notes of fruit, caramel, raisins, toffee, orange, and vanilla. The finish is long and luxurious. The 50 Best Vineyards In The World To Visit In 2023 https://www.augustman.com/hk/dining/drinks/worlds-50-best-vineyards-2023/ Sat, 22 Jul 2023 00:00:46 +0000 https://www.augustman.com/hk/?p=111920 vineyards

The search for the best wine and wineries has been the inspiration for many travel itineraries. So much so that a report by The Business Research Company found that the global enotourism market reached nearly USD 8.2 billion in 2023. Hence, the 50 best vineyards in the world are worth taking a peek at for a premium experience.

As per the fifth chapter of the World’s 50 Best Vineyards Awards 2023, Argentina’s Catena Zapata tops the list of finest viniculture estates. The coveted awards go beyond the technicalities of production and taste. Instead, the focus is on the entire tourism aspect of the business — honouring vineyards that offer a holistic travel experience, mesmerising views, a fine-dining experience, unique staying options, luxury wine pairing and more.

More About the World’s 50 Best Vineyards and How They Are Chosen

How are the Vineyards Selected?

The process of choosing the top vineyards is similar to that of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants. A global voting academy is created with chairmen for 22 geographical wine regions. Each chairperson, then, makes a board of around 36 unnamed wine and travel specialists. They nominate a maximum of seven vineyard destinations that they have personally been to over the past couple of years. After collating all the votes, the vineyard with the highest votes bags the apex position and the others follow accordingly.

Though a list of the top 100 is made, only the top 50 are officially aired.

What are the criteria?

According to Bloomberg, Andrew Reed, managing director of wine and exhibitions at William Reed, said, “Decent wine is a given.” Destinations with great quality produce combined with a fine travel experience make the cut. Although there are no well-defined criteria, wineries must be open to the public.

Judges base their decisions on the overall visitor experience — stunning architecture, astounding sceneries, a gourmet restaurant, interactive sommeliers, cellars with a long history, engaging activities, wine and dine pairings, music and ambience.

The Podium Winners

To put things into perspective, the Argentine winner also bagged the accolade for being the best in the overall South American region. Established in 1902, Catena Zapata is located in the picturesque setting of Mendoza. It is the country’s oldest family winery and is known for perfecting and putting exquisite Malbec wine on the world map. A Mayan temple-like building, and a newly-opened restaurant, Angélica Cocina Maestra, make the Adrianna vineyard a wholesome experience.

Rioja’s stunning Bodegas de los Herederos del Marqués de Riscal vineyard, which took the second spot, boasts a long and rich heritage. Founded in 1858, it is the site where the first Rioja wines were bottled with the first vintage dating back to 1862. The burgeoning popularity of the estate’s wine in the 20th century compelled them to cover the bottles with a golden mesh as a seal of authenticity, a practice that later caught on with wineries around the world.

Today, Hotel Marqués de Riscal, a luxurious Frank Gehry creation, stands as the main attraction. A Michelin-star restaurant by Chef Francis Paniego completes the experience.

In the third spot is Chile’s VIK. It climbed one position up from its 2022 rank and offers alluring views of the Andes Mountains. Also boasting a Frank Gehry-designed hotel, the winery is perched high up on the hill, amidst a beautiful valley, flanked by the Andes.

In a statement, Reed said, “The World’s Best Vineyards continues to highlight wine tourism destinations around the globe and with an impressive list of new entries this year, it’s more important than ever.”

The Best Single Malt Scotch Whisky In The World That Does Not Cost A Bomb https://www.augustman.com/hk/dining/drinks/best-scotch-whisky-in-the-world/ Sat, 22 Apr 2023 02:00:10 +0000 https://www.augustman.com/hk/?p=101999 best scotch whisky

A soft, sweet-spicy whisky from Scotland’s oldest working distillery has been declared the world’s top single malt Scotch. Aged in three types of wood and boasting a 45% ABV, the amber comes at a price of only USD 55 (HKD 431 approx.). Here’s all about it.

One of the most prestigious competitions in the world of all things heady – the International Wines and Spirits Competition (IWSC) awards the most exceptional spirits from around the world, giving each a score out of 100. The 2023 edition saw several quality libations receiving medals – double gold, gold, silver, bronze. And of thousands of whisky entries, Glenturret Triple Wood 2022 was crowned the best single malt Scotch with 99 points. Produced by Scotland’s oldest names in the business – dating as far back as 1763 – the dram is creamy and spicy. Best part? It will only set you back by USD 54.96.

The world’s best scotch whisky promises smooth sips

World's best Scotch whisky 2023 Glenturret

Glenturret is well known for being a key part of Scotland’s favorite blended Scotch The Famous Grouse, which also includes The Macallan and Highland Park. However, of late, it’s been in the headlines for its new earthy-spicy 33-year-old Prowess. What truly set off a wave of chatter around the brand however, was the Triple Wood 2022 – a smooth Scotch deemed the best in the world. It’s distilled using traditional methods – a hallmark of the brand. This includes wooden washbacks, slow processes, hand mashing, and cutting the spirit by eye.

Although it doesn’t have an age statement, as the name suggests the dram has been matured in three casks – American Sherry, European Sherry, and Bourbon. The payoff is a golden pour that has hints of dried fruits, oak, and vanilla on the nose. Every sip is sweet and creamy, with hints of peaches, cinnamon, candied ginger, orange, dark chocolate, and pepper. The finish is creamy, smooth, and subtle. The whisky comes in a stunning heavy decanter bottle designed by luxury glass art brand Lalique.

 Glenturret

The IWSC Panel – which includes the likes of master blenders David Stewart and Richard Paterson – meanwhile, described it as, “A summer Turkish delight of sweet raisin, marmalade and orange blossom aromas with a rich fruitcake palate, hints of brown sugar and honey, with a creamy toffee texture on the finish.” Other expressions from the brand that won medals include the 10-year-old 2022 Release Single Malt Scotch Whisky (95 points), 15-year-old 2022 Release (95 points), and 12-year-old Whisky 2020 Maiden Release (95 points). The 7-year-old 2022 Release, 12-year-old 2022 Release, 10-year-old Peat Smoked 2021 Release, 10-year-old Peat Smoked 2020 Maiden Release, and Triplewood 2020 Maiden Release received silver medals.

About 23 Scotch whiskies were rated 98 – just short of a point to match up to the Triple Wood 2022. Of these, 21 are single malts and 3, blended whisky. About 105 Scotches have a score between 95 and 97 – earning them a gold medal. Originally known as Thurot Distillery, Glenturret is nestled on the banks of the Turret River in the Scottish Highlands. Its history spans both illegal and legal production. The water source Loch Turret flows over the granite in the Grampian Mountains – producing exceptionally soft water that’s perfect for producing whisky. That said, it only recently began offering up single malt expressions – with popular options being the 10, 12, 15, and 21 year-olds. The 25 and 30 year-old expressions, meanwhile, are difficult to source.

At an average price of USD 54.96 – this complex whisky is worth an addition to your whisky collection, especially if you enjoy a good ol’ on-the-rocks ritual.

Indulge In 10 Of The Most Decadent Tequilas In The World https://www.augustman.com/hk/dining/drinks/most-expensive-tequila-in-the-world/ Sat, 15 Apr 2023 04:00:11 +0000 https://www.augustman.com/hk/?p=102144 Expensive Tequila

Traditionally hailing from Mexico, tequila is essentially made from the round pineapple-shaped stem or piña of the blue Weber agave plant. Often party starters, tequilas are a favourite among many liquor connoisseurs, and when done right, an exceptional tequila bottle can become a prized possession, too. But why do some of these expensive tequilas fetch such high prices? Let’s find out.

Made by steaming the piña and distilling the extracted sap, tequila hits the right notes owing to its fine ageing in French oak casks, sherry barrels or American white oak barrels. These impart undertones and add layers to the flavour profile when the juice is left for fermentation. The production of this alcohol is typically concentrated in five primary regions — Jalisco, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit and Tamaulipas — and harvesting the blue agave plant is a generational art.

In fact, the drink gets its name from Tequila City, located in Jalisco. Interestingly, these specifications and ingredients required to make a bottle of fine tequila give it an overall standard taste and texture. Hence, aficionados may experience a uniform taste every time they sip on an expensive tequila.

What are the different types of tequilas?

Those who enjoy its earthy flavours know that tequila is a classic drink which can elevate the mood instantly. However, if you are new to the drink and want to give luxury tequila a try, these terms can help you identify the best dram.

Blanco (white) or silver tequila is the clear and unaged alcohol that is finished in bottles right after distillation. Therefore, it carries a strong raw agave taste.

Joven (young) tequila is also called gold tequila. It is a concoction of Blanco and aged tequila and is usually fermented for a short time. It carries a smooth texture and a mild sweet taste.

Reposado (rested) tequila is a type of aged spirit that is rested for a minimum of two months in oak barrels, but not more than a year. It has a light golden colour and a smooth woody taste.

Añejo (aged) tequila is kept in oak barrels for at least a year, but not exceeding three years. Such a prolonged fermentation period imparts a dark amber shade and has a smooth, complex taste.

Extra Añejo (extra-aged) tequila is the longest-aged tequila that is stored in oak barrels for at least three years. It is of a dark brown shade and has a rich taste.

Some of the most expensive tequila brands are based on these parameters, and their decanters make them the perfect drinks for those with sophisticated tastes and preferences. The drinks also come in expensive bottles, which are sheer works of art.

Here are some of the most expensive tequilas in the world

1 /10

Tequila Ley .925 Diamante

Price: USD 3,500,000 (HKD 27,473,760 approx.)

The most expensive tequila in the world demands such a high price not only for its liquid content but also for the precious dragon motif bottle the liquor comes in. Created by Jose Davalos Mejia, it took nearly 10 months and is made of pure platinum and studded with white diamonds.

The drink is produced by one of the most renowned distilleries in Mexico, known for resting top-notch expensive tequilas. This exquisite millionaire’s extra añejo drink is made from a 100 per cent blue agave plant and is aged in a barrel for seven years. This premium sip has an alcohol-by-volume (ABV) content of 42 per cent.

Reportedly sold for the first time in 2010, this high-quality tequila is worthy of a place in an exquisite collection. While other Ley .925 tequilas are readily available across liquor outlets, this bottle is a rare find.

2 /10

Tequila Ley .925 Ultra-Premium Project MX 33

Price: USD 2,25,000 (HKD 1,766,200 approx.)

Another of the most expensive tequilas from the house of Ley .925, this premium alcohol made it to the Guinness Book of World Records in 2006 for its sky-high price. Like the Diamante, this exclusive tequila is also named after the expensive bottle, which is crafted of platinum and pure white gold, and designed by Fernando Altamirano.

The alcohol is extracted from pure blue agave and is aged for six years at the Hacienda La Capilla distillery in Mexico. As per reports, only 33 of these bottles were produced, making it a rare possession.

Clase Azul Master Artisans Limited Edition

Price: USD 19,015 (HKD 149,270 approx.)

For this limited-edition production, renowned tequila brand Clase Azul enhanced the rich traditions and cultural heritage of Mexico. Released in 2021, this edition saw the collaboration between the spirit company and famous Mexican artist Jesús Guerrero Santos of Guadalajara, Jalisco. He has spent over three decades in uplifting Mexican art and is heavily influenced by architectural study, sacred art and various baroque styles. All these are expressed most beautifully in the three decanters of this tequila.

These contain expensive tequilas of extra añejo blends. They are aged for eight years, first in American whiskey casks and then in one of the three sherry casks — Amontillado, Oloroso or Pedro Ximénez. The spirits are then finished in Madeira wine casks.

Clase Azul says, “Together, we consider these creations to be a poem in which each piece is a verse.”

Patrón En Lalique: Serie 2

Price: USD 7,500 (HKD 58,880 approx.)

A rich wooden box encases the crystal decanter that holds the crystalline bright gold-coloured alcohol. Designed by acclaimed French glassmaker Lalique, it flaunts an Art Déco style with straight geometric lines. The stopper at the head — a stunning crystal bee with hand-painted gold accents — makes this a gorgeous collaborative product between Patrón and Lalique.

A bottle of 750 ml of this 40 per cent ABV tequila is a collector’s dream. The fruity aroma of the alcohol is infused with notes of vanilla and oak. Every sip brings out smooth tastes of sweet honey and light agave as well. The extra añejo tequila is aged for eight years in French oak, American oak and well-seasoned sherry barrels.

Patrón x Guillermo Del Toro Añejo Tequila

Price: USD 5,000 (HKD 39,250 approx.)

Veteran filmmaker Guillermo del Toro calls Jalisco his homeland just like well-known tequila producer Patrón. Therefore, a Patrón x Guillermo del Toro collaboration is a natural outcome.

The bottle is the brainchild of famous illustrator Guy Davis, who has worked with del Toro on several film projects and has a morbid theme about it. Evocative of the horror genre that defines the director, the bottle is hand-painted and houses the tequila and the liqueur in two separate compartments. Two votive candles are also provided to amplify the dark mood when the contents are laid out.

Made from 100 per cent blue agave, the añejo tequila is finished in oak barrels and has 40 per cent ABV. The bright golden colour spirit has a sweet aroma with notes of dried fruits, nuts and vanilla. A sip of this luxury dram brings up sweet honeyed and medium French oak tastes. The liqueur is also a rich drink and perfectly complements the exquisite tequila. A medium amber hue alcohol with a fruity aroma and hints of vanilla, clove and caramel, the liqueur has an ABV of 35 per cent.

Jose Cuervo 250 Aniversario

Price: USD 2,400 (HKD 18,840 approx.)

“Those in the know, know there is no substitute for Jose Cuervo.” This one-liner describes Jose Cuervo‘s creations in the best way. And, after over 250 years of high spirits, the brand remains one of the indomitable names in the tequila world, and its 250 Aniversario produce is one of the finest. The bottle was launched in 2008 as a commemoration of the founder, José Antonio de Cuervo y Valdés, receiving a writ of land from the King of Spain back in 1758.

This extra añejo tequila is made from pure blue agave plants that are fully ripened and collected from a single field. It uses an array of ingredients that provide a unique taste, aroma and texture. It is ‘ultra aged’ in a combination of French and American oak barrels and mixed with tequilas from other demijohns of the company’s cellar and finally finished in Spanish sherry barrels for a year. It is said to have a distinct agave flavour, with hints of chocolate, butterscotch and vanilla, and leaves a creamy aftertaste.

AsomBroso The Collaboration

Price: USD 2,195 (HKD 17,230 approx.)

A premium tequila from the house of AsomBroso, The Collaboration is an extra añejo barrel-aged pour that has 40 per cent ABV. The high-quality alcohol is rested in American casks from Napa’s Silver Oak Cellar.

The Collaboration is stored in a unique bulbous decanter made by acclaimed Italian artist Luciano Gambaro on Murano Island, Italy. The barrels and ageing process give it a complex taste and aroma of wine and agave. Upfront, there are notes of caramel, cream, butterscotch and cherry. Later, it opens up fruity flavours of blackberry and wild apple and is finished with mild oak and a light smoky twist.

Price: USD 2,095 (HKD 16,450 approx.)

This 40 per cent ABV tequila belongs to the personal collection of distiller Ricardo Gamarra. The extra añejo tequila is unique due to a mellow sweet flavour profile that it gets from double resting for 10 years in wine barrels brought from Portugal; hence, the name.

The alcohol is made from pure blue agave and is mixed with small amounts of previously oak-aged tequila. It has a rather smooth and silky feel with a mildly sweet and oak-like aroma. Taste-wise, there is oak with floral hints, which sets the stage for a toffee and sweet port flavour. One can get the essence of toasted vanilla and honey as well.

Even the bottle exudes class and sophistication. Designed by Luciano Gambaro, it resembles a vintage decanter belonging to 18th-century Europe. It took two years to be designed and comes with its own handmade cedar humidor.

Expensive Tequila

All these are expressed most beautifully in the three decanters of this tequila.

Kim Jones, Hennessy X.O Team Up For Limited-Edition Cognac And Sneakers In Hong Kong https://www.augustman.com/hk/fashion/hennessy-xo-kim-jones-fabric-of-time-hny-low-sneaker-info/ Tue, 28 Mar 2023 10:34:52 +0000 https://www.augustman.com/hk/?p=100439 Hennessy

Hennessy has recently brought its newest collaborative Hennessy X.O to Hong Kong. Following in the footsteps of Frank Gehry, Cai Guo-Qiang and RidleyScott, Artistic Director Kim Jones gives his take on the iconic decanter.

On top of the special edition decanter, Jones has paired it with an artisanal pair of trainers that arrive in cognac-coloured nubuck leather. “I’m fascinated by the rich heritage of Hennessy, a household name behind which artisans have spent hundreds of years creating this special cognac. Storytelling is very important for me regardless of what I’m designing or who I’m collaborating with – I want my designs to educate and inspire people through the stories they tell,” says Jones.

The liquid itself comes in two variants, the first being the sculptural Hennessy X.O Masterpiece. Limited to just 200 examples, the decanter was inspired by traditional parchment wrapped around the glass for protecting the fragile parchment paper labels. This modern update was produced in titanium using 3D printing technology and is finished by hand.

The second version of the decanter is the ready-to-wearversion which sees an aluminium second skin. The metal cover hides the contents inside but further emphasises the decanter’s iconic shape. “When I saw how the vintage Hennessy bottles were wrapped, it spoke volumes to me about how precious each one is, and how they were handled. I was particularly touched by their history and the sense of how generations have dedicated their time to making each step of the process better and better. That same process also holds true with fashion.”

Lastly, the accompanying sneakers are crafted in an LVMH-owned shoe factory in Italy and are inspired by retro basketball sneakers. Each pair sees tonal grooved rubber, Kim Jones’ “KJ” initials and the Hennessy bras armé emblem at the heel. Like the limited-edition bottle, the sneakers were also made in a small batch.

Bubble Tea: Looking At Its Origin, History And Best Recipes https://www.augustman.com/hk/dining/drinks/what-is-bubble-tea-origin-ingredients-flavours/ Fri, 10 Feb 2023 05:28:36 +0000 https://www.augustman.com/hk/?p=96222

Imagine a refreshing creamy milk tea served chilled in a tall glass or jar, at times with punches of fruit syrups. A native of Taiwan, boba or bubble tea is now nothing short of a worldwide phenomenon and has an ever-growing band of takers. With every country and region having its own variation, let us find out more about bubble tea.

Whether you call it bubble tea, boba tea or pearl tea, the chewy round tapioca pearls are the main reason behind the hype around this drink. Such is its global popularity that on 29 January 2023, Google dedicated a play-along doodle to this milk tea and highlighted some of the well-known flavours and ingredients.

However, while first-timers may have divided opinions when they take a sip of this beverage or bite into the tapioca, bubble tea is generally a much-loved beverage that has stirred up a culinary wave.

Today, this pearl milk tea often comes garnished with delectable toppings and infused with unique flavours, which render a rather contemporary twist to the classic bubble tea to suit modern taste buds.

Here’s everything to know about bubble tea — origin, how to drink and recipes

Origin of bubble milk tea

Tapioca tea has its roots dating back to the 17th century but gained mass popularity only in 1980s Taiwan. As per Britannica, “the genesis of bubble tea traced to 1949, when an entrepreneur and former bartender, Chang Fan Shu, developed a tea that was shaken in a martini mixer to create a foamy surface.”

It is said that this hand-beaten tea, called shou yao, is the predecessor of bubble tea as we know it today. The resultant product became a luxury cold drink that wasn’t affordable for the Taiwanese until the country saw an economic boom in the 1980s. In 1986, Britannica adds, another businessman named Tu Zonghe opened a tea shop in T’ainan where he sold tapioca balls called fen yuan in green tea.

Another bubble tea origin story says that a Taichung tea shop called Chun Shui Tang started a fad of serving Chinese tea cold after being influenced by Japanese iced coffee. A few years later, the shop’s product manager, Lin Hsiu Hui, at a staff meeting was so bored that she dropped her sweetened tapioca dessert called fen yuan into her tea and drank it. The resultant product tasted so delicious that the tea recipe was included in the shop’s menu. The beverage gained immense success and fame. Soon, other tea shops started adding tapioca pearls to their teas and began experimenting with fruit juices and other flavours.

Bubble tea’s popularity and global growth

Over time, bubble tea has undergone a lot of changes. The recipe was modified to incorporate larger-sized tapioca pearls, which are termed boba pearls. In fact, the straw used to drink bubble tea was also widened. This way, customers could enjoy the refreshing boba drinks along with the pearls, without having to use a spoon. This led to the popularity of the names boba tea and boba nai cha, and today, the terms bubble tea and boba tea are used synonymously.

Such is its mass appeal that bubble tea spread rapidly among the Chinese expat population residing in New York, London and Berlin in the 2000s. Soon, it spread its wings across Europe, and boba shops began to crop up in other parts of North America as well.

Served cold with an array of natural flavours and generous amounts of tapioca pudding balls in a rich milk tea base, the drink has seen an unprecedented consumer surge, as Asian cuisine and typical Asian snacks have grabbed attention worldwide.

What do the boba pearls taste like?

Despite having several variations, the basic ingredients and form of bubble tea remain the same. This, when made right, gives a smooth consistency for drinkers to enjoy bubble tea.

The most interesting aspect of this tea drink is the chewy tapioca pearls. The thick, chewy consistency of these balls sitting at the bottom of the iced tea is somewhat of a cross between jelly and chewing gum.

Generally, the boba pearls are made from cassava starch, a root vegetable native to South America also referred to as yuca. Black tapioca pearls, soaked in caramel syrup, are the most common ones. Depending on the ingredients used, they can also be white or transparent.

These tapioca pearls do not have a particular taste of their own, but when steeped in sugar syrup, they take on a sweet taste. There is also something called popping boba. Produced via molecular gastronomy, these balls are made by combining sodium alginate and flavoured fruit juices. When bitten, the balls release a burst of sweet flavours. What makes them different from other flavoured boba is that it doesn’t use tapioca.

How to make bubble tea?

Bubble tea has moved on from being just one of the traditional Taiwanese drinks and has adapted to the many global food trends that have rendered their own influence on it.

As per Thrillist, its tea base is usually either green or black tea, which can be modified according to preference, with a punch of any kind of syrup such as peach, strawberry and lychee. Authentic boba milk tea is a concoction of black tea, milk and tapioca pearls.

However, there are certain iterations which stray from these bases. Even in Asia, places such as Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan, bubble tea has seen the rise of a wide spectrum, which includes white tea, taro tea, brown sugar tea and matcha green tea variations. Additionally, others use sweetened condensed milk to accentuate the flavour profile. Although traditional bubble tea uses milk and Assam or Darjeeling tea, there are several water-based variations as well.

If you are looking for caffeine-free variants, the wide gamut of fruit teas, often accompanied by fruit slices, are available at boba shops. Besides these, most bubble tea shops also offer classic milk alternatives such as almond milk, coconut milk and soy milk.

You can also customise your drink as per your liking with popular bubble tea toppings such as popping boba, red jelly beans, pudding, basil, chia seeds, fruit jelly and ice cream. Bubble tea can also be topped off with whipped cream and fresh fruit slices.

Pro tip: If you are a slow drinker and wish to savour the flavours, ask for less crushed ice.

Some of the best bubble tea recipes to try

The number of boba shops across the globe has seen a major hike. Even in India, major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru have ample bubble tea stalls that offer several delectable flavours and combinations.

However, you can also whip up a batch of boba tea yourself. Just purchase pre-made tapioca pearls for easy making of the drink.

Classic Earl Grey bubble tea

Ingredients: 32 g dried boba pearls, 2 Earl Grey tea bags, 1 glass of milk of choice, a splash of fruit syrup or nectar and water.

Method: In a saucepan add 480 ml of water for 32 g of boba and cook till they begin to float. Once done, turn the heat to medium and allow it to cook for another 12-15 minutes. Remove it from the flame and let them rest for the same time.

To make the caramel syrup for the balls, boil 120 ml of water on high heat and add 150 g of sugar and dissolve it.

To make the tea base, boil 240 g of water and add Earl Grey tea bag(s) as per preference. Remove the bag(s) after 15 minutes and chill it. This step can be done while preparing the boba or slightly earlier so that there is time to let the tea cool.

Strain the pearls from the water and soak them in the sugar syrup for 15 minutes. Now, once the ingredients are ready to assemble, pour the tea into a tall glass, add the boba pearls and add milk to make boba milk tea. Add fruit juice for a sweet fruity flavour or just some more water for a concentrated taste.

Persian rose milk bubble tea

Ingredients: 5 g loose black tea leaves (preferably Assam) or 2 black tea bags, 450 ml hot water, 50 ml milk of choice, 50 ml sugar syrup, 1-2 drops of rose water per serving, 120 g cooked black tapioca pearls, whipped cream, rose petals and slivered pistachios (optional) and ice.

Method: Soak the tea in boiling water and allow it to cool until lukewarm. If you are using tea bags, remove them only before pouring the tea into the glass. Once the tea is ready, pour it into a tall glass and then add milk, sugar syrup and rose water. Stir gently until mixed thoroughly.

Next, carefully add the tapioca pearls to it. Leave it to chill and add a few cubes of ice. You can garnish it with whipped cream, dried rose petals and slivered pistachios.

Hibiscus cooler bubble tea

Ingredients: 10 g dried hibiscus flowers, 250 ml hot water, 2 tbsp lemon juice, 4 tbsp sugar syrup, 400 ml cold water, 120 g cooked coloured tapioca pearls and ice.

Method: Soak the hibiscus flowers in the hot water and allow the mix to cool until it’s lukewarm. Once done, remove the petals and pour this ‘hibiscus tea’ into a jug. To this, add the lemon juice, sugar syrup and cold water and stir well. Leave it to chill.

Add the tapioca pearls and a few ice cubes and serve it in tall glasses. Garnish with a slice of lemon.

What Is ‘Sex Coffee’ And How Can It Boost Your Libido? https://www.augustman.com/hk/dining/drinks/give-your-morning-coffee-a-sex-twist-with-sex-coffee/ Sun, 22 Jan 2023 10:00:46 +0000 https://www.augustman.com/hk/?p=94849 sex coffee

It’s time to pimp your regular morning pick-me-up. Because mixing black coffee with raw cacao powder, coconut milk, honey, cinnamon, and maca powder will give you a potion that promises to boost your libido. Known as “sex coffee,” it’s a trendy beverage that’s causing a buzz, even if it draws on some not-so-new beliefs.

Forget about oysters, asparagus, or ginseng if you want to get in the mood. These ingredients have long been touted as foods with aphrodisiac properties, but a much more comprehensive recipe has been stealing the limelight lately. Straight from the United States, sex coffee is, in fact, a combination of many ingredients that have long been said to stimulate desire, in particular, cacao and cinnamon. All sources describe roughly the same way of proceeding: start with a cup of very hot black coffee and mix in a spoon of raw cacao powder, two tablespoons of coconut milk, a tablespoon of honey, half a teaspoon of cinnamon, and a teaspoon of maca powder.

In the world of aphrodisiac foods, one new arrival here is maca powder. Native to South America, this superfood is composed of a cocktail of trace elements and minerals, such as zinc, selenium, vitamin B9, iodine and potassium. In its natural state, it is a plant of the Brassica family that grows only in the Peruvian Andes, at an altitude of more than 3,500 meters.

The Peruvians have long claimed that it has aphrodisiac virtues, notably its capacity to boost testosterone levels. Although not scientifically proven, word even has it that maca powder can improve fertility by increasing the quality of sperm and eggs.

A cup of Joe and off you go!

Beyond the many ingredients in this concoction, coffee itself could supposedly boost your sex drive. Back in 2015, a study conducted by researchers from the University of Texas, published in the scientific journal Plos One, suggested that men who drink two to three cups of coffee a day are less likely to have erectile dysfunction. In detail, the consumption of 85 to 170 milligrams of caffeine could reduce the risk of experiencing erectile dysfunction by 42%. Don’t overdo it though, since this drops to 39% if a partner has between 171 and 303 milligrams of caffeine.

For women, coffee supposedly stimulates the brain, sending a signal that can stimulate arousal. However, this revelation may only apply to those who don’t already drink coffee regularly. And any such conclusions should be approached with care since the study conducted by Southwestern University in Texas was carried out in 2006 on a group of female rats.

On TikTok, however, people are raving about the effect of caffeine when it comes to getting it on. The notion of coffee as a great sexual stimulant is such that a series of videos have been turning up the heat on the Chinese social network in recent weeks.

Many young users have been filming themselves, cup in hand, to demonstrate their coffee’s ability to boost their orgasms. It all started with a video of @cupofalexx_official, liked nearly 400,000 times, claiming to have increased the intensity by 50%. A claim which, of course, has not been scientifically verified.
